Call for cohabiting couples to have same rights as those who are married

The move would mean two people who have chosen to live together rather than marry or enter a civil partnership would have to split property 50-50 just as divorcing couples must do.

MPs have been pushing for a bill that means 3.4 million cohabiting couples have the same financial rights as those who are married.

This will ensure that both parties are protected and that in the event of a relationship break up one party is not left without a roof over their head.

The call, if successful, would mean two people who have chosen to live together rather than marry or enter a civil partnership would have to split property 50-50 just as divorcing couples must do in the event that they separate.

The report suggests that one in five couples live together without getting hitched or being in civil partnerships meaning this would be a big step should it be successful.
