{"id":1270,"date":"2023-02-10T12:16:44","date_gmt":"2023-02-10T12:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lundbennett.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1270"},"modified":"2023-02-10T12:17:46","modified_gmt":"2023-02-10T12:17:46","slug":"church-of-england-backs-plans-to-bless-gay-couples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lundbennett.co.uk\/blog\/church-of-england-backs-plans-to-bless-gay-couples\/","title":{"rendered":"Church of England backs plans to bless gay couples"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b class=\"ssrcss-hmf8ql-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">As of February 2023, the Church of England has backed proposals to allow prayers of blessing for same sex couples.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Its position on gay marriage will not change and same-sex couples will still be unable to marry in church.<\/p>\n<p>Bishops&#8217; plans for last month have drawn criticism from both sides &#8211; those who think they are too extreme and those displeased with their lack of ambition.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">But the motion was passed in all three of synod&#8217;s &#8216;houses&#8217;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Priests will have the option to bless gay couples but can opt out. The first blessings could be in the summer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The Archbishop of York, the Most Revd Stephen Cottrell, said the Church was in a &#8220;in a better place today&#8221; as a result of the vote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\"><em>&#8220;I&#8217;m really pleased that we now will be able to bless same-sex couples who are faithfully living in a civil marriage or a civil partnership, in church,&#8221; he told BBC Radio 4&#8217;s PM programme. &#8220;But at the same time, I&#8217;m glad that we believe there is a way forward to hold together in the Church those who in good conscience will not be able to offer such services.
