{"id":448,"date":"2016-05-28T10:02:43","date_gmt":"2016-05-28T10:02:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lundbennett.co.uk\/blog\/?p=448"},"modified":"2021-01-19T09:50:41","modified_gmt":"2021-01-19T09:50:41","slug":"domestic-violence-victims-in-england-and-wales-are-still-being-let-down-by-the-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lundbennett.co.uk\/blog\/domestic-violence-victims-in-england-and-wales-are-still-being-let-down-by-the-police\/","title":{"rendered":"Domestic violence victims in England and Wales are still being \u2018let down\u2019 by the police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Domestic violence and abuse is defined by the government as controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. <\/p>\n<p>Theresa May, home secretary, has said that there have been improvements in how the police deal with victims of domestic violence and abuse since a review in 2013 however \u2018examples of the same shameful attitude\u2019 persist. The home secretary spoke at the Police Federation\u2019s annual conference and said \u2018Victims of abuse are still being let down and reports are not being taken seriously enough\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>The findings of the review in 2013, by Her Majesty\u2019s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC), into the way police handled domestic abuse found victims were not treated with respect and one example was a victim who overhead a responding officer say: \u201cit\u2019s a DV, we\u2019ll be a few minutes and we\u2019ll go on to the next job\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>The Home Secretary said that more victims are coming forward and crimes are being properly recorded which is resulting in more convictions however she commented that \u2018we continue to see examples of the same shameful attitude that HMIC uncovered in 2013\u2019.
